+水車前的葉片與車前草科（Plantaginaceae）的車前草十分相似故名水車前，其葉型幼葉呈線形到披針形，成熟葉則為卵至心形，葉綠色或深綠色、具 5 到 9 條平行脈，葉基生地面而莖部則不甚明顯。花兩性、單生，花色白至淡粉色，每年 3 至 9 月氣溫回暖的時節正午前後挺出水面綻放，是水車前整個生活史最吸睛的時刻，水車前種子細小且在非熱帶地區有休眠特性。因為原生育地的開發及農藥污染等多重因素，導致水車前在臺灣野外分布族群大量減少，目前僅以宜蘭員山鄉的個體數量較穩定，惟正受到入侵性水草粉綠狐尾藻的挑戰。
